Syllabus is an Oregon-wide examination program offered through OMTA. It is a formal assessment of student's knowledge in music theory, technuque, ear training, sight-reading and repertoire. Syllabus challenges students of achieve their musical goals. Students get a certificate for each successfully completed level; those studens who successfully complete all 10 levels receive for a medal from OMTA.
Examinations take place twice a year, in the middle of November and in the middle of March (Friday through Monday). Current Portland Syllabus schedule can be found here. Advanced registration is required and must be submitted by the teacher 5 weeks before the examination. The examination fee is $22 - $55 depending on the student's level (Classical I through Classical X), plus $5 Syllabus registration fee. Those students who pass the exam get a certificate. High school senoirs who pass CM tests level 7 or higher for three years during grades 9-12, including the final year of high school, are eligible for a senior medallion.
Please keep in mind that no photocopied sheet music is allowed at the Syllabus exams. I will give you a list of boks required for the Syllabus in the beginning of the school year. Music can be purchased at many online resellers; some of them are listed on my Useful Links page. Also, since theory is an important part of the Syllabus exam, students should work on theory every week starting from the beginning of the semester.
