Syllabus Examination

Syllabus is an Oregon-wide examination program offered through OMTA. It is a formal assessment of student's knowledge in music theory, sight reading, rhythm reading, repertoire, and technique. Syllabus challenges students to achieve their musical goals. Each student is tested one-on-one by an OMTA adjudictor. The duration of the test is from 20 mins to an hour, depending on the student's level. Adjudicator provides a written evaluation of the student's performance and verbally communicate observations made during the exam to the teacher during post-Syllabus conference. Students get a merit certificate for each successfully completed level; those studens who successfully complete all 10 levels receive a medal from OMTA.

Examinations take place twice a year, usually in October-November and in the March-April. My studio belongs to the NW area. Advanced registration is required and must be submitted by the teacher 5 weeks before the examination. A student is only elegible for the Syllabus test after studying with an OMTA teacher for 6 months. The total examination fee is approximately $30 - $65 depending on the student's level.

Please keep in mind that no photocopied sheet music is allowed at the Syllabus exams. I will give you a list of books required for the Syllabus in the beginning of the school year. Music can be purchased in music stores or from internet stores; some of them are listed on my Useful Links page.
